'Retreat' is an appropriate name for this true gem of a place!
Beautiful attention to detail.
The communal areas were perfect for our family to connect, for gathering and lingering. The layout is excellent with rooms in separate buildings for personal space and privacy.
Rosendal Country Retreat is also the perfect base from which to explore the wonderful Eastern Free State.
Travelling: Roadworks on the R70 are progressing apace - the light at the end of a tunnel is a spotlight already. We took the gravel road from Paul Roux to Rosendal for the last stretch - a very easy and beautiful drive.
Rooms: 5/5. Service: 5/5. Location: 5/5.
Rooms: Beautifully appointed, luxurious, functional rooms. Calm and warm at the same time.
Nearby activities: Many outdoor activities to make the most of the fresh air and beautiful Eastern Free State. We enjoyed the Saturday market!
Safety: Very safe. This is another "breath of fresh air."
Walkability: Easy and safe.
Food and drinks:Lovely facilities in the communal areas. The local joints (Krummel and Yolla's this time) ticked the boxes.
Hotel highlights: Luxury, great view, romantic, quiet, child-friendly, great value.

We loved our stay at The Rosendal Country Retreat. The staff were very helpful. The accommodation was spacious and contemporary in design. Log fires available in the communal lounge as well as in the rooms. Small treats on arrival such as freshly baked bread and homemade butter. Our only complaint would be the very bad road to Rosendal which added at least an extra 1h30 to our journey time.

Wonderful getaway location for an escape from the busy city life. The property is nestled in a serene and picturesque location surrounded by rolling hills, lush greenery and a wonderful view. The room was cozy, comfortable and tearfully decorated. The host was warm and friendly, and gave info about activities the can be done around town.

Absolutely loved the hot tub. Stunning views at sunset. Personnel was so friendly & made us feel at home straight away. Unfortunately, we had loadshedding on Saturday night, but unit was equipped with rechargeable lights. Luckily the fireplace in the unit also helped, more reason to "snuggle up" with your partner.

This is a hidden gem- beautiful place in a peaceful arty town. The rooms are really well done with good linen, modern designs and gorgeous gardens. We especially liked the wood burning hot tub. We have already booked our return visit.

We really enjoyed our stay at Rodendal, the room, the lounge, everything exceeded our expectations. It's a pity we only booked for 1 night, definitely coming back.

I loved this town. It’s a beautiful town and the retreat hotel is really serene. It serves as a hotel and wedding venue. Has a beautiful view. The staff was friendly. And a lovely place to drive out and get fresh air and slow down. The town has beautiful hiking routes and mountain biking trail

The Rosendal Country Retreat provided us with so much serenity and quality sleep. The rooms were spacious and quite stunning, so as the surrounding areas (Visit Beverly at the Art Contemporary art gallery :) ). We really enjoyed using the fireplace and the wood-fired hot tub while catching the beautiful sunset. The fresh bread was also amazing! The peace and tranquility of the Retreat was what made my stay so memorable.

"It was such a beautiful and modern space to spend the weekend in. Perfect for couples, friends or family trips. Friendly service, willing to walk the extra mile and beautiful view from the lounge."

"Free State’s hidden gem! Truly the most tranquil and serene country retreat. I love the slow living ambiance and minimalistic approach of this establishment. The village of Rosendal is incredibly beautiful beyond words. The rooms are tastefully decorated and the amenities offered are luxurious. The staff was always willing to assist. The best feature has to be the wood-fired hot tub with an incredible view of the Maluti mountain range. It’s just the perfect place to unwind and get away from the hustle bustle of city life".
"An actual value for money with lovely experiences around. Perfect for that serenity getaway for solo, couples or family. The rooms are very spacious, secluded and the fireplace in the room is the highlight of it all."

"5 Stars! What a beautiful stay! A treat and a retreat for sure. Bonni, our host was meticulous in her communication and so hospitable. The hot tub has the best views of nature and red sky sunsets and it was warm and ready for our use when we arrived. The rooms were immaculate, even better than the pictures. I would also highly recommend the Service Station wine bar for a visit and food. The only regret is that we didn’t stay longer."

"The place to go if you want to (re)treat yourself. Absolutely beautiful and peaceful, only positive things to be said. Here our souls caught up with our bodies…so much detail to the smallest things without it being over the top. Great focus on comfort and luxury while keeping it minimalistic which forces you to slow down and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
Bonni is an amazing hostess and goes out of her way to make your stay as memorable and special as possible. All the staff are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble. We decided to stay a day longer before continuing our journey to Clarens, even our teenage daughter complained that she missed the tranquility of Rosendal.
If you are planning to stay on a Sunday or Monday evening, remember to pack some buns or snacks as the restaurants are not open. Once you are at the retreat you do not want to leave in any case ;-)
The people in Rosendal are extremely friendly and despite loadshedding, Hennie from Oppidam went to great trouble to provide us with a wonderful lunch late Sunday afternoon. If you enjoy nature, silence, good food, friendly people and need to ‘recharge’, The Rosendal Retreat is the place to go. We will definitely be back."
